Rotoscoping to the Rescue April 10th, 2009
As I alluded to in a previous post, untrained animal actors can be quite fussy. The reality is they won’t do what you want. Instead, while they do whatever they feel like doing, you just hope to capture something that you can use.

In my fxphd.com rotoscoping class, the task this week is to remove a person from a shot used in a reality TV program. An actor walks around a corner in a house, and a producer is visible on the stair steps. The goal is to paint out the producer from the stairs and track the modified image back into the shot.

I’m taking a rotoscoping class via the online visual effects training site fxphd.com. The class is RTO210: Secrets of Paint and Roto. Rotoscoping is a tool for visual effects in live-action movies. An object in a scene can be traced to create a matte used to extract that object from the scene. Extracted objects can then be composited into other scenes.
