Yesterday started with a brisk cold morning. Despite the sun shining, it was a very cold day. However there was a graveyard nearby I wanted to check out, so I bundled up and headed out into the arctic tundra. With the recent snowfall, there wasn’t anywhere to park. I found a spot at a nearby trail head and walked the few hundred yards to the cemetery.

North Cemetery
Located a few miles south of Milford, NH, the North Cemetery sits tucked into the trees on the west side of state road 122. When traveling south, it’s easy to miss and I drove right by on my first attempt. As typical of New England properties, the cemetery is marked with a hand-built granite wall. This makes the cemetery look very old, but the reality is granite walls are very common and not necessarily and indication of age.

Rock Walls
There were a number of old stones in this cemetery, with some dating back to the early 1800s. For the most part the writing on the stones faced west, although there were a number of exceptions. With the bright sun and bluebird skies, the shadow play from the trees created an interesting look with the gray stones and the white snow.

Snowy Gravestones
As I mentioned there were many old stones, but the graveyard also had recent burials. There was a lot of room at the back of the cemetery for new residents. Most of the old stones were placed at the entrance. Some of the thin stones showed damage from age, but that just adds to the character of the cemetery.

Old Stones
After walking through the graveyard and snapping off a number of photos, my hands and face were frozen from the winter chill. It was a good day to visit the cemetery, but I was eager to warm up.
