A walk into the bee barn   October 4th, 2008

My brother owns a beekeeping operation in Northeast Indiana, and I get to experience honey production first hand.  This video was shot in late September, 2008.  I walk into the bee barn surrounded by seemingly frantic bees.  The bees are robbing honey from recently extracted supers.

It’s easier for bees to gather honey then it is to make honey from nectar.  After we extract honey from bee boxes (known as supers), we place the supers in the back of the barn.  It doesn’t take long for scouts to find the residual honey, and then the race is on to gather the honey before another hive can get to it.

I’m able to walk through the stream of bees because they are focused on gathering the remaining honey in the supers.  If there were bee hives inside the barn, I’d be in danger of the bees going into attack mode.  The bees race into the barn, gather honey, and get out as fast as they can so they can return for more.
